Consultation
What is Counseling Consultation?
The goal of counseling, a helping field, is to assist clients in understanding their circumstances as those situations are occurring in the present. But this is not always a direct process. A counselor can be a consultant, as well as a direct provider. The counseling consultation process happens when a counselor either observes or acts as an expert to provide advice. Consulting takes place to evaluate:
-
Mental health: this occurs when another individual (counselor or other professional) has a question regarding the mental health of a client.
-
Behavioral: this occurs when a child has behavioral problems and a parent or teacher consults with the professional or expert in efforts to assist the child by determining the cause of the behavioral difficulties and form a solution.
-
Organizational: consultation does not always occur between a client and a counselor. Many times an organization will seek the expertise of a counselor.
Consultation is voluntarily provided by the counselor to assist another professional or an organization with a problem. Thus, counseling consultation is said to be triadic which means that there are three parties (sometimes groups) involved: a consultant, a consultee, and a client. It is also voluntary on the part of the consultant.
